A New Year Reset for Your Social Media

A quick check-in to organize your accounts, clean things up, and start the year strong.

There’s something about a new year that convinces me it’s time to start fresh in every area of life. Diet. Exercise. Screen time. Pillows. Yes, pillows. I threw all of mine away this month, so clearly I’m committing to the fresh start.

And don’t even get me started on my new-year obsession with eliminating sugar from my diet. Just know it’s been a long 26 days, and my family tells me I’m noticeably less grumpy than when the journey began. Progress.

ANYWAY. Back to marketing.
Wipes sweat off brow.

Before you worry about content, trends, or how often you “should” be posting on social media this year, I want you to pause and look at something far less exciting, but far more important: Your account access, information, and security. This is the very foundation of social media. And it gets skipped all the time.

One simple place to start

If you do nothing else this week, do this: Log into your business social accounts and make sure everything is accessible, accurate, and secure. That’s it. No content calendar required.

Why this matters more than you think

Social media isn’t just about creativity. It’s also about organization, access, and security. When those things aren’t in place, social media tends to feel frustrating, chaotic, and honestly risky. When they are in place, it becomes something you can manage, even if you’re not posting constantly.

A solid foundation means:

  • You know exactly which accounts your business has

  • You have proper access and ownership

  • Your profiles are complete and accurate

  • Your presence looks active and intentional, even if posting is minimal

That alone removes a lot of stress. Trust me. Think of it this way:

  • I know who has access.

  • I know when the last post went live.

  • I know my bio, links, and contact info represent my brand accurately.

  • I know my accounts are as secure as I can reasonably make them.

A few questions worth checking early in the year

As you start the year, it’s helpful to honestly ask yourself:

  • Do I have access to all of my business profiles?

  • Are logins secure and tied to the right email address?

  • Are there platforms I created years ago and forgot about?

  • Are my bios, links, and contact info current?

  • If someone found my business today, would it feel active and accurate?

  • And please tell me my password is not 123 plus my pet’s name

A few quick security reminders

Hacking attempts are becoming more common, and when they happen to business accounts, they can derail your marketing fast. A few simple reminders:

  • Be cautious with emails or Meta messages about account access or security

  • Don’t click links from unknown senders claiming “urgent account issues”

  • Always check the sender address and look for red flags

  • Make sure ad accounts are properly linked to business pages, not just personal profiles

  • And when in doubt, don’t click. Ask first.

If you need help, find a marketer you trust. I’m always an email away, except for major holidays, my birthday, and when a new season of Ghosts drops. Kidding. Mostly.

Until next time, change those passwords.
